When relocating to Montenegro, securing residency for your spouse and children is a vital part of your planning. Under Montenegrin immigration law, holders of valid temporary residence permits (obtained through company formation or property ownership) have the legal right to sponsor their immediate family members. This guide explains the process.
Who Qualifies for Family Reunification?
The family reunification program (Spajanje Porodice) allows primary residence holders to sponsor:
- Spouse: Legally married husband or wife. Common-law partnerships are generally not recognized for immigration purposes.
- Dependent Children: Biological or legally adopted children under the age of 18.
- Adult Dependents: Under exceptional circumstances, parents who are fully dependent on the primary applicant due to health or age.
Required Documentation for Family Members
Each dependent must submit a separate application with the following documents:
- Valid Passport: Must have at least 6 months of validity remaining.
- Proof of Relationship: Certified marriage certificate (for spouses) and birth certificates (for children), bearing an apostille and translated into Montenegrin by a licensed court translator.
- Clean Background Check: Police clearance certificate from the home country for all applicants over the age of 16, issued within the last six months.
- Health Insurance: Proof of local private health insurance or registration with the state health insurance system.
- Proof of Financial Sufficiency: Bank statement showing at least €3,650 per dependent (or a declaration of financial support from the primary applicant).
Submission and Processing Timeline
- Location: Applications are submitted at the local Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) office in the municipality where the family resides.
- Presence: All applicants, including minors, must be present in person to capture biometric data.
- Processing Time: The MUP typically issues family residency cards within 20 to 30 days of submission. Cards are aligned to match the expiration date of the primary sponsor’s residency permit.
